WHO'S THE WOMAN, WHO'S THE MAN (1996)

Starring: Leslie Cheung, Anita Yuen, Anita Mui, Jordan Chan, Theresa Li, Eric Tsang

Sequel to the hugely successful He's a woman, She's a man. It starts off exactly where part one had left off: Sam and Wing are snogging in the lift, and later they become an item. Although Sam is glad that Wing has turned out to be a woman, he still finds it difficult living with her -- an affliction that caused his breakup with his ex, Rose (Carina Lau).

In an unbelievably short time, Wing becomes hugely successful in her singing career, to the point that everyone is saying that Sam is living off her, since Sam has been unable to compose songs lately. The story would be pretty boring if it just focused on Sam and Wing, so enter pop diva, Fong Yim Mui (Anita Mui), who Sam falls for (and has a passionate night of sex with) and this complicated love triangle is the premise of the whole film.

Obviously, Wing becomes jealous and angry, and for the rest of the film we see how Sam tries to woo her back into his complicated life. Unfortunately, this sequel is not on par with the original, especially without the superb satire on the pop industry that made the first film so enjoyable to watch, and some of the situations are simply not as funny. The quirk of the first film was the double identity of Wing, and how the hapless Sam was seeing himself falling in love with a man. That is lost in this sequel, and the whole thing degenerates into a cliched love story between three people.

The most enjoyable character has to be Yu Lo (Jordan Chan), who tries desperately to get lesbian O (Theresa Li) into the sack. He even shaves off his leg hair to prove that he is as smooth as any women. Slick.
