WE'RE NO BAD GUYS

The first quarter of an hour is a brilliant starter, with the emphasis on brutal, swift killing. Maybe there is hope for director Wong Jing after all. But unfortunately, he couldn't keep his sudden stroke of genius to last the whole film.

A prime witness (Li Siu Kei) is protected by cops in a hotel waiting for an impending court case. Plane (Ekin Cheng) and Carrie (Gigi Leung) are two of the cops protecting the witness, but when Plane goes off to buy dinner, a ruthless killer by the name of Angel (Alex Fong) sweeps into the hotel and kills everything and everyone in his path, including Carrie, the girlfriend of Plane.

Jump one year ahead and Plane has become an unstable, withdrawn and depressive individual, unable to work with anyone. Turkey Chu (Jordan Chan) starts his first day at work as Plane's new partner, and they seem to hit it off, with Turkey providing much of the comic relief.

Turkey has always been in love with pin-up model Tinny Chung (Vivian Hsu), and when she becomes the target of Angel, he jumps at the chance to protect her. Meanwhile, Tinny's friend from overseas, Mandy (Gigi Leung), is the spitting image of Carrie, and Plane understandably falls for her.

When the action scenes appear, it attacks you like a hammer blow to the head, such the force and the intensity, yet there is a huge contrast between the non-action scenes, which generally falls into the lighthearted romantic comedy type. Luckily, there is a lack of the usual cheesy situations that often plague such affairs, although it isn't great anyway, and quite often the funny scenes fall flat on its face.

After this film was released on the cinema, a great commotion was made by the Hong Kong media of the relationship between Ekin Cheng and Gigi Leung, which shifted on-screen to off-screen. Ekin Cheng later dumped his girlfriend, Maggie Siu, whom he has been with for seven years, for Gigi Leung. Not exactly ground-breaking news, but the media had a field day.
