NEW LEGEND OF SHAOLIN (1994)

Starring: Jet Li, Chingmy Yau, Wang Lung Wei, Hui Miao, Chi Cheung Wah

Jet Li portrays another famous Chinese folk hero. This time it is Hung Hei Kwoon, a mate of Fong Sai Yuk (who Jet Li played in both Fong Sai Yuk 1 & 2), and another fighter against the Manchu regime. As there are so many films about these folk heroes, the stories are practically the same: Hung and others had to flee the Fukien Shaolin Temple when it was burnt down by the government.

Years later, Hung and his young son, Hung Man Ting (played by precocious kid, Tse Miu), are still on the run from the government agents. They have no choice but to hire themselves out as bodyguards for money. Makes sense, as how can you earn money if you're running from place to place? Here they meet Chingmy Yau, a thief who later falls in love with the handsome Hung. But nothing is ever peaceful, as Hung's enemies finally locate him, and Hung has to flee yet again.

Unfortunately, New Legend of Shaolin was directed by sleaze director Wong Jing, so you can fully expect his usual crap jokes, sexual innuendos, and other relative connotations that fail to be anything but funny. The action is well executed, but because of Wong Jing's touch on the story, the film turns out to be only average.
