C'EST LA VIE, MON CHERIE (1993) |
|
The film that made Anita Yuen into a superstar overnight. This simple tale of love and sadness became the hit of 1993, drawing in audiences by the thousands. On paper, the story looked clichéd, and not what you would expect to be a box-office hit, but what made it work were the performances of both Anita Yuen and Lau Ching Wan. Critics thought Yuen's performance was so good that she later received the Best Actress gong at the Hong Kong film awards. The story is quite straightforward: Anita Yuen plays a street-wise girl, spending most of her days being happy. Her family has a business performing opera-style songs in the open markets, and she often is there helping them out. One day, a bloke (Lau Ching Wan) moves into a flat near hers, and they gradually become friends. Lau, a saxophonist, had broken up with his girlfriend (Carina Lau), and spends most of his day bumming out. Yuen helps him on the road to recovery, and they soon fall in love. But when it seems that Yuen actually gets to be happy, her dormant illness suddenly takes over her life. Needless to say, the film ends on a sad note, and those sentimental types will find themselves sniffing away tears when the credits roll. Anita Yuen does give a marvellous performance
in this film, so much so, that you couldn't not sympathise with her plight,
and her struggle to live a happy life despite her illness is an inspiration
to us all. The moral of the story is that every day you should live your
life to the fullest, because it could be your last. |
