CAUSE WE ARE SO YOUNG
(1997) |
|
A romantic comedy that focuses on the love relationships of three best friends living together in Hong Kong. Sort of like a Hong Kong version of Friends. Au Ka Chuen (Leo Ku) is a graphic designer with a habit of collecting Coke cans and other such memorabillia. He says he has plenty of time to do this because he hasn't got a girlfriend. His flatmate Leung Choi Shun (So Chi Wai) has his life controlled by his new girlfriend, Mimi (Gigi Lai): she phones him four times a day, constantly checks on him, and organises his life around hers. Meanwhile, the other flatmate, Paul Lui (Mark Lui) is a DJ at a nightclub, and he usually has no problems attracting girls, but can't find one he truly loves. The story kicks off when Chuen falls in love with Amy (Amy Cheung), but she only has eyes for Paul. The relationship between Leung and Mimi is becoming strained when Mimi discovers that Leung is still too young, naive, and unprepared for a permanent relationship. When Paul is considering his feelings for Amy, he falls in love with a hyperactive girl named Yung (Nicola Cheung), and while all this is going on, Chuen finds solace in Mrs Chan (Kathy Chow), a beautiful woman he has fancied all along. As with most films that involve the hugely talented Vincent Kok (he wrote and directed this), he manages to ooze plenty of light-hearted and humourous situations into this romantic flick. The most funniest is Au Ka Chuen himself, whose bad luck with women is as hilarious as Leung's self-deprecating humour on any given situation. Only Mark Lui (composer, singer, musician) seems to be the only one with a stone stuck up his arse, as he comes across as too stiff and unable to emote. Of course, this is no serious romantic film, and
nor does it pretend to be. What makes it tick is that good humour is used
surprisingly well throughout the film, which adds to the appeal, and besides
Mark Lui and Amy Cheung, the rest of the cast are solid and witty. |
